about

Following the release of lead single ‘Fine’, Sydney-based duo Salarymen have today unveiled their debut EP ‘Scene Change’ via Scenic Drive records.

As a body of work, ‘Scene Change’ gives a sense of expert versatility, blending elements of garage rock, folk and indie pop, while shifting between different musical eras to keep things fresh. Lo-fi lead single ‘Fine’ perfectly captures the essence of the band, with Thom and Renee delivering skilful harmonisation throughout the whole track, while wistful 70s pop tune ‘Runaway’ utilises the charming power of call and response lyrics, reminiscent of a modern-day Sonny and Cher.

Next up, ‘That Man’ delves into the duo’s moodier side – touching on themes of domestic abuse, Renee’s striking vocal performance has drawn comparisons to the likes of Angel Olsen and Julia Jacklin. Following this, brand new track ‘Unlucky’ is a scathing, yet sunny slice of indie rock written about the struggles of egotistical bandmates, while ‘Something to Me’ discusses the struggles of balancing creative outputs with work and societal expectations, harking back to a golden era of 1980s Australian indie rock. The EP rounds off with the duo’s first ever single ‘Please’, offering strong pop-inspired melody lines and a chorus that is hard to forget.
