about
Following the release of their recent single ‘All In Vain’, Sydney-based duo Salarymen have returned with a poignant new self-produced offering ‘Rerun’, out via Scenic Drive Records.
‘Rerun’ sees the pair further evolve their sound, this time opting for dream-pop and psych-infused soundscapes reminiscent of artists like Beach House and Tame Impala. Vocalist Renee de la Motte serenades listeners with an ethereal melody, paired beautifully with bittersweet chord progressions and spacey, layered synths. Her passionate vocal delivery and melancholic lyrics evoke a sense of sorrow and yearning for easier times. The song then builds up to a cinematic breakdown with suspenseful, chaotic chords, which leave the listener on the edge.
Songwriter and vocalist Renee delves deeper into the inspiration behind ‘Rerun’: "This song is about longing for a place you desperately need to get back to, while you’re stuck somewhere else. The lyrics reflect the stress of being separated from those you love, and the sense of tension that builds up inside of you and starts to drive you a little crazy. The last two years have felt a bit like groundhog day, and that starts to eat away at your mental health after a while”.
Multi-instrumentalist and producer Thom Eagleton adds; “The instrumentation is supposed to feel surreal, to mimic the state of disconcerting repetition we’ve found ourselves in over the last few years, almost like a dream you can’t escape.”
Salarymen have had an outstanding 12 months all things considered, releasing a debut EP ‘Scene Change’ and three follow up singles, which received consistent support from the likes of triple j, Spotify, Apple Music, Life Without Andy, NME, Pilerats, Happy Magazine, Rage, FBi, 2SER and 3RRR. Most recent single ‘All In Vain’ was also selected as a winner of Smirnoff Australia’s ‘Ads for Artists’ competition, hand-picked by The Jungle Giants.
Meanwhile, their compelling live show has seen them sell out venues across Sydney, support artists like The Lazy Eyes and Hayley Mary (The Jezabels), and sign a recent booking deal with The Harbour Agency.
lyrics
I have tried to pass away the time
Feeling trapped inside my mind
What I would give to run straight down those alleyways
Turn every corner not knowing what awaits
So come on, please don’t be too long
This humdrum weighs a tonne
Every day’s a re-run
Nostalgia comes on strong
When it’s all going wrong
It’s only just begun
And I’m already done
Cherry blossoms line the city skies
Corporate landscapes filled with Shrines
Dreaming of nights with strangers you cannot forget
And every person that you meet becomes a friend
So come on, please don’t be too long
This humdrum weighs a tonne
Every day’s a re-run
Nostalgia comes on strong
When it’s all going wrong
It’s only just begun
And I’m already done
